Swimming legend Susie O'Neill breaks world record at 50 years of age

<p>Susie O'Neill has broken a world record at the age of 50 in a triumphant return to international swimming at the World Masters Swimming Championships in Japan.</p> <p>The two-time Olympic gold medallist won the 50m butterfly, breaking the world record and championship record for the 50-54 age group. </p> <p>She touched out Britain’s Michelle Ware record by 0.52sec, with a time of 29.08 seconds, securing gold for her age group. </p> <p>The swimmer nicknamed Madame Butterfly during her career, proved that she's still got it after winning her first competition and butterfly race since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.</p> <p>This comes two months after she set another record when she swam an excellent time at the Masters championships in Queensland as part of her 50th birthday celebrations, which qualified her for the world championships. </p> <p>She agreed to compete at the relay event in the Masters championships to celebrate her 50th, with her <em>Nova 106.9 Breakfast </em>co-hosts Ash Bradnam and David Lutteral, plus one of their listeners.</p> <p>In a post-swim interview O'Neill told her co-hosts: “I felt like vomiting at the end to be honest,” </p> <p>“In the olden days I was nervous before the race, but I was calmer when I went out behind the block. This was like the opposite. I was calm before, but as I walked out behind the blocks I got a bit dishevelled compared to normal. Really jittery.</p> <p>“It was time to go out, and my goggles had come apart. My hands were shaking - and I couldn’t put my goggles on because they came apart at the nose-piece.</p> <p>“So, I had to get a lady to help me, and the girl that I ended up just beating was trying to calm me down. My nerves hit me really, really badly.”</p> <p>“I got a massive surge of adrenaline, and I reckon it helped me,” she said.</p> <p>O'Neill added that she initially didn't realise she had broken a record. </p> <p>“I wasn’t sure when I first finished.”</p> <p>Despite the challenges, the swimming legend relished in the camaraderie with a few swimmers that she had met in the past. </p> <p>“I met so many people in the marshalling area that I knew. For example, there was a Canadian girl in that race, and we swapped clothes in 1989 when we came to Japan for the Pan Pacific Games,” she said. </p> <p>The swimmer told Channel 7’s <em>Sunrise </em>that this was a one-off and she has no plans to continue racing. </p> <p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

Does Australia need new laws to combat right-wing extremism?

<p>At the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH2IUKaWXKw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Press Club</a>, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil flagged that Labor would propose <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/dec/08/clare-oneill-warns-counter-terror-laws-may-need-to-change-to-better-handle-rightwing-extremism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">changes to Australia’s counter-terrorism laws</a>. She cited an increase in diverse threats beyond religious fundamentalism, a trend towards lone-actor, low-sophistication attacks, and more <a href="https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/asio-chief-flags-alarming-increase-in-children-lured-to-extremism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">younger people being radicalised</a>.</p> <p>Specifically, she referred to the threat of right-wing extremism, which in 2021 was <a href="https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/7269257/ideologically-motivated-terror-now-taking-up-half-of-asio-work/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approaching 50% of ASIO’s caseload</a>. She did not suggest the laws will be “<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/dec/08/clare-oneill-warns-counter-terror-laws-may-need-to-change-to-better-handle-rightwing-extremism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">overhauled</a>”.</p> <p>However, O'Neil hinted that changes to criminal law could target specific ways that extreme right-wing groups organise themselves compared to groups such as al-Qaeda or Islamic State.</p> <p>Since the September 11 terrorist attacks, Australia has enacted at least 96 counter-terrorism laws, amounting to <a href="https://law.unimelb.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/4287735/02-Hardy-and-Williams-34.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 5,500 pages of legislation</a>. So do we need any more laws, or changes to existing laws, to combat right-wing terrorism?</p> <h2>Australia’s counter-terrorism laws</h2> <p>Australia has the <a href="https://theconversation.com/before-9-11-australia-had-no-counter-terrorism-laws-now-we-have-92-but-are-we-safer-166273" target="_blank" rel="noopener">largest collection of counter-terrorism laws</a> in the world. This reflects a strong belief in legality: that powers and offences should be written into the statute books and not be left to arbitrary executive power. But it also shows how readily Australian governments have responded to evolving threats with ever-increasing powers.</p> <p>Our counter-terrorism laws contain countless criminal offences and powers of surveillance, interrogation and detention. As an example, a <a href="https://theconversation.com/control-orders-for-kids-wont-make-us-any-safer-49074" target="_blank" rel="noopener">control order</a> can require a child as young as 14 to obey a curfew and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet to protect the public from a terrorist act or prevent support for terrorism.</p> <p>Most of the offences and powers rely on a broad statutory definition of terrorism. A “terrorist act” means harmful conduct or a threat that aims to: (1) advance a political, religious or ideological cause; and (2) intimidate a government or section of the public.</p> <p>Importantly, this definition is ideologically neutral – as are all the laws. They do not mention Islamist or right-wing terrorism.</p> <p>The laws apply equally to these and other terror threats, no matter the ideology. A white supremacist who prepares or commits a terrorist act faces life imprisonment in the same way as a religious fundamentalist.</p> <h2>What changes might be made?</h2> <p>We won’t know the details of Labor’s proposed changes until next year.</p> <p>The government might ask parliament to tweak the definition of a “terrorist organisation” in Division 102 of the federal <a href="http://www5.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/cca1995115/sch1.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Criminal Code</a>. A terrorist organisation is one that is directly or indirectly preparing a terrorist act (or that advocates a terrorist act).</p> <p>Various offences stem from this definition. It is a crime, for example, to recruit for a terrorist organisation or be a member of one.</p> <p>The Australian government maintains a <a href="https://www.nationalsecurity.gov.au/what-australia-is-doing/terrorist-organisations/listed-terrorist-organisations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">list of proscribed (banned) terrorist organisations</a>. Of the 29 currently listed, only three adhere to far-right ideology.</p> <p>This reflects a longer history of Islamist terrorism, though Australia has also <a href="https://www.themandarin.com.au/176216-australia-catching-up-with-proscription-of-far-right-groups/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lagged our closest allies</a> in banning right-wing extremist groups.</p> <p>Some features of these groups can make banning them difficult. Their membership structures, ideological demands and support for violence can be less clear compared to groups like al-Qaeda and Islamic State, which have committed and encouraged terrorist acts all around the world.</p> <p>Right-wing extremist groups <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/jan/05/far-right-and-anti-racism-groups-face-off-in-melbourne-flashpoint" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hold divisive rallies</a>, <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/national/the-far-right-are-capable-recruiters-and-have-found-fertile-ground-thanks-to-covid-20210921-p58tn7.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exploit protests</a>, spread racist sentiment and encourage hatred against minorities – but most of these acts do not constitute terrorism.</p> <p>Expanding the definition of a terrorist organisation could capture right-wing extremist groups that are dangerous to society but do not obviously engage in or support terrorist acts.</p> <p>Another possibility is that Labor could seek to ban Nazi and other hate symbols that such groups commonly use. New legislation in Victoria, which comes into force at the end of this month, makes it an <a href="https://content.legislation.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2022-06/591323bs1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offence</a> punishable by 12 months’ imprisonment to publicly display the Nazi swastika (Hakenkreuz).</p> <p>The state offence will not apply to the <a href="https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbols/search" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hundreds of hate symbols used by right-wing extremists</a>, but it sends an important message that neo-Nazi ideology holds no place in Australian society. It provides a legal mechanism to counter threats of right-wing extremism in a way that the federal counter-terrorism laws currently do not.</p> <h2>Are changes needed?</h2> <p>Australia’s counter-terrorism laws are already extensive and apply to all types of terrorism, so no obvious strategic gaps need to be filled. If a criminal offence or power is needed to combat terrorism, Australia already has it and more.</p> <p>Minor changes to Division 102 could target specific features of right-wing extremism compared to Islamist terrorism. Federal laws could supplement emerging state laws by outlawing hateful symbols used by right-wing extremists and other terrorist groups.</p> <p>However, <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-28/banned-neo-nazi-groups-set-sights-on-australia/100030072" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more right-wing groups</a> could be proscribed under the laws as they currently stand. Decisive action to ban internationally recognised right-wing extremist groups, combined with a national inquiry into hate crime law and its <a href="https://tacklinghate.org/blogs/new-research-defining-and-identifying-hate-motives-bias-indicators-for-the-australian-context/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reporting</a>, would send a strong message. Beloved British sitcom star dies at age 91

<p>British actress Josephine Tewson has died at age 91. </p> <p>A statement from her agent revealed that she died peacefully on Saturday night, at a care home in London for people in the entertainment industry.</p> <p>Josephine was best known for her role as Elizabeth Warden, the neighbour of Hyacinth, on <em>Keeping Up Appearances</em>, which she starred in from 1990 to 1995.</p> <p>She also featured in several other British TV series throughout the 1980s, but her role on <em>Keeping Up Appearances</em> cemented her as a star. </p> <p>Following on from her success in the comedy show, the show's writer then gave her the role of Miss Davenport in <em>Last of the Summer Wine</em>, which she played from 2003 to 2010.</p> <p>In a statement, her agent Jean Diamond said, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Josephine Tewson."</p> <p class="sc-2j4b0b-0 fslJYJ" style="color: var(--text-color); font-size: 16px; box-sizing: border-box; padding: 5px 0px; margin: 0px; line-height: 1.44rem; word-break: break-word; font-family: Poppins, Poppins-fallback, -apple-system, Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji';">Tributes for the actress have poured in online, with one fan posting on Twitter, "RIP Josephine Tewson. Adorable family photo shows Princess Mary’s kids all grown up

<p dir="ltr">Princess Mary and Prince Frederik’s children appear all grown up in stunning photos shared to social media. </p> <p dir="ltr">The members of the Danish Royal Family attended the annual parade at Grasten Castle in southern Denmark on Sunday to greet members of the Grasten Ring Rider Association.</p> <p dir="ltr">The gorgeous photo shared to social media shows Australia’s beloved Princess Mary alongside her husband Prince Frederik, her daughter Princess Isabella, 15, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 11.</p> <p dir="ltr">Their eldest son Prince Christian, 16, however did not appear at the event. </p> <p dir="ltr">“The Crown Prince's family today received the Gråsten Ringrider Association's procession at Graasten Castle, where your Royal Highnesses are currently staying,” an English translation of the caption reads.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Princess Mary shares adorable unseen photos of Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine for their ninth birthday

<p>Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has shared four previously unseen photographs of twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine to mark their ninth birthday.</p> <p>The heartwarming photos were taken by none other than Mary herself over the course of a few months.</p> <p>Two of the snaps show the pair in a loving embrace while another features Prince Vincent with his two older siblings, Princess Isabella, 12, and Prince Christian, 14.</p> <p>The final shot shows Princess Josephine dressed in riding gear, tending to a horse and looking as though she’s about to plant a kiss on its nose.</p> <p>Prince Vincent was born 26 minutes before his sister in Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet, one of the largest hospitals in Denmark, and is fourth in line to the Danish throne, making Princess Josephine the fifth.</p> <p>According to Danish tradition, names are not released until the child’s christening, which is why the twin’s names were revealed on April 14, 2011.</p>

The Danish royal family like you've never seen them!

<p>The young Danish royals sprinted to the finish line of a charity run on June 10, where their father Prince Frederik and their mother Princess Mary were waiting for them with open arms.</p> <p>Prince Christian, 13, Princess Josephine, 12, and twins Princess Isabella and Prince Vincent, eight, were seen dashing across the finish line at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen on June 10.</p> <p>Prince Christian shared his first message via Instagram about the Royal Run in Denmark. The caption, translated from Danish read:</p> <p>“In a little while, along with my siblings, I will run a family mile. Princess Mary's twins look so grown up in new birthday photos

<p>It seems like only yesterday that Australia’s Princess Mary married Danish Prince Frederik, so it’s hard to believe that her two youngest, twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, have just turned seven.</p> <p>To celebrate their birthday on Monday, the Danish Monarchy released four brand-new photos of the adorable duo – two official portraits taken on a white background by photographer Jens Rosenfeldt, and two more relaxed shots from their December visit down under, which were taken by Princess Mary herself. <strong>To see the gorgeous pics, scroll through the gallery above.</strong></p> <p>Vincent and Josephine were born at Copenhagen University Hospital on January 8, 2011, joining Princess Mary and Prince Frederik’s older children, Prince Christian, now 12, and Princess Isabella, 10. Woman fined $50,000 for trying to hide husband’s millions from ex-wife

<p><span>A woman has been fined $50,000 and given a suspended jail sentence after she tried to hide her husband’s millions.</span></p> <p><span>Josephine Aapa Smith hid the money out of spite towards her husband’s ex-wife, Joanne Young, but was caught out on Facebook.</span></p> <p><span>Josephine was found guilty of contempt of the Supreme Court for putting up her Harbourside penthouse she shared with husband, hotelier Leslie Young, as security for a $5.8 million bank loan.</span></p> <p><span>The deal was done despite a court order freeing any dealings on the Pyrmont apartment because Mr Young had been ordered to pay Joanne $3 million and weekly maintenance after throwing her out of the Wiley Park Hotel they co-owned and having her two dogs put down.</span></p> <p><span>Josephine told the Supreme Court that she had gone through an acrimonious break-up from Mr Young before using their apartment as collateral for the loan in February 2015.</span></p> <p><span>Justice Stephen Rothman did not believe her claims after being shown Facebook photographs of the happy couple at Lewisham’s Louis Hotel in October 2016.</span></p> <p><span>“The breakdown of her relationship with Mr Young ... either did not occur at the time or was not acrimonious,” Justice Rothman said. “I do not accept that [they] had severed their relationship at the time or very soon after.”</span></p> <p><span>The $5.8 million bank loan was made to a company controlled by Josephine.</span></p> <p><span>“The overwhelming inference is that the entire scheme was designed to thwart [Ms Young’s] attempt to obtain from Mr Young the damages the court had awarded,” the judge said.</span></p> <p><span>“It is clear [Ms Smith] was motivated in part by financial gain and probably as matter of malice towards Ms Young.”</span></p> <p><span>Justice Rothman found that Josephine had deliberately hidden the deal from the court and her former best friend, Joanne.</span></p> <p><span>“I consider the contempt of court a serious one and to be categorised as both civil and criminal,” he said.</span></p> <p><span>The judge suspended Josephine’s six-month jail sentence for six months after she entered into a good behaviour bond.</span></p> <p><span>In 1992, Joanne and Mr Young married and she separated from him in 1999 when he began living with Josephine.</span></p> <p><span>Joanne is yet to receive any money awarded to her by the courts. </span></p>

I cruised solo and loved it!

<p><em><strong>Over60 community member, Josephine O’Neil, is an avid cruise traveller. Here, she explains why she believes more women should take the plunge and set sail solo.</strong></em></p> <p>I had always wanted to go on a cruise and after my marriage broke down I was even keener. I saved so much a week and because I live on a fixed income, it wasn't easy but I was determined. Many of my friends were keen to come with me but each fell by the wayside when they found out the cost because I wanted a cabin to myself. So, I kept looking at the cruise I had been originally interested in and sailed out of Sydney on December 9, 2015 on the Pacific Jewel. My daughter Angela saw me off and I don't know who was more nervous as I walked in at White Bay.</p> <p>The first thing you notice is everyone is happy and smiling, it's obvious we're all on holidays. My first night I shared a dinner table with a couple from the Central Coast who had been on multiple cruises and thoroughly enjoyed all the tips they gave me.</p> <p><strong>Overcoming fears</strong></p> <p>The only negative aspect of solo cruising is the cost. It's as expensive as if a couple are cruising and that's very tough. I'm a light sleeper so I knew I wanted my own cabin but the cost is daunting!</p> <p>I have cruised now three times, twice by myself, once with a couple of friends but each time have had my own cabin. I think some women might be scared of cruising on their own but you are perfectly safe; the staff are fantastic, friendly and helpful.</p> <p>The battery in my cabin door died on my last cruise and at midnight I was stuck. I had new knees and really needed to sit down instead of going down to the service desk but just as I thought it was all too much, I spotted a cleaner who found me a chair and did everything for me. Nothing is a bother for the staff.</p> <p>I'm sort of a nervous Nellie but would love another cruise as soon as I can afford it and if it's by myself that's fine. Everyone is in a wonderful mood because there's no cooking, no bedmaking, no housework just relaxing, reading and whatever you want.</p> <p><strong>Anything can happen</strong></p> <p>My daughter was starting at a new firm and realised she should take a holiday before she left her old company. I convinced her to go on a cruise. A year ago, she left on the Jewel for 10 nights and she met the love of her life. They have just bought a home together so anything wonderful can happen on a cruise.</p> <p>It's the best holiday in every sense of the word. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Everyone is smiling and happy and ready for a chat. Princess Josephine steals the show in new photos of the Danish royal family

Proof that Princess Mary’s daughter is just like any other child

<p style="text-align: left;">As Crown Princess Mary, Crown Prince Frederik and their flock of little Danish royals watched over the annual Hubertus Hunting event from the balcony of Eremitage Castle, four-year-old Princess Josephine showed that even royal children aren’t immune to cheeky mischief. And we absolutely love her for it!</p> <p>As she watched the event beneath her, Josephine was caught on camera pulling a series of funny faces, and even cheekily poking her tongue out.
